What is a dab pen?
If you want to vaporize concentrates like distillates, shatter, live resin, or any kind of wax, then a wax, shatter, or dab pen will be your best friend. They all use a coil or atomizer where you place your dab, which heats up and vaporizes your product for you to inhale. These pens are a quick, easy, and portable way to enjoy potent THC hits while on the go!
Wax pens / dab pens / shatter pens are a much more portable version of the more powerful desktop dab units, known as Electric Dab Rigs. Most will come with a battery strong enough last one or two days' worth of very heavy usage and will come with an included dab tool to load your concentrates with.
Some wax pens, like the Boundless Terp Pen, are also known as nectar collectors or concentrate straws. Their atomizers are located at the far end, opposite the mouthpiece, and they can be used to pick up your dabs just like a straw. Even though they are shaped differently, they work just like regular refillable dab pens. The only difference is that you don’t need a dab tool to scoop up your wax.

Can you control their temperature?
Most dab pen rigs we carry don’t have precise temperature control. Instead, they use an LED display with three or four pre-set temperature settings. These settings vary, but generally, you can choose a low temperature for thin, wispy clouds with more flavor, or a higher temperature for bigger clouds with faster vaporization, though with less flavor.
Coils vs Bucket Heating Elements
Depending on your preferences, you can choose between two different kinds of heating element on these cannabis vaporizers: A coil atomizer or a bucket atomizer.
A Coil Atomizer will have your dab sitting directly on coils that will heat up very quickly as an electrical current is run through them. They will have near-instant heating and bigger clouds but will be ultimately harder to clean and will need more replacements over time.
A Bucket Atomizer will have a layer normally made from metal or ceramic that sits above a heating element. This style will be better for people looking for a relaxed session style, as the barrier between the heating element will take a bit more time to heat your dab.
How do you clean them?
If you're using a electric dab pen with a ceramic bucket atomizer like on the Utillian 6, the only cleaning you'll need to do is with a vape cleaning stick after you've done your session. With a coil, it will be a bit more difficult to get into all of the nooks and crannies so you'll have to do a ten-minute soak in isopropyl alcohol when you begin to notice a change in taste or performance. After that, run a quick burn-off cycle to remove any lingering alcohol residue once you re-attach it to the body of the vape.
Dab Pen Accessories
Many popular dab pens come with two different coil options. This lets you change how you vape to match what you like best. Be sure to check out the tips and tricks section on our blog for more ideas on how to customize your vaping experience!
How much do they cost?
In our current lineup, the dab pens cost between $50 - $350. Cheap Dab Pens will have less battery life and smaller atomizers, whereas the best wax pens will tend to use powerful triple-coil atomizers or larger ceramic bucket atomizers. Many heavy cannabis users prefer a concentrate vaporizer portable enough to take on vacations, so they often pick up a backup shatter pen that’s smaller and easy to carry around.
Concentrates can be bought through legal dispensaries, and CBD can be bought in all provinces as it is fully legal & you can expect to pay between $20-$60 for a gram of concentrate.
Do dab pens smell?
Dab pens will have much less scent than either smoking a joint or dry herb vaping. Instead of the traditional 'dank' smell, they will smell like baking sugar treats or honey depending on the strain. If you vaporize your dab at high temperatures, there will be a bit of a smoky scent left in the air, though.
As concentrated forms of THC are directly contrived from the cannabis flower, there will still be some terpene odors left over. However, since there is much less plant material being heated in dabs, the smell quickly dissipates in a room within minutes. As well, you won't get any sort of lingering smell on your clothes or hair so people won't notice when you rejoin them after your session.
Best Dab Pen Brands
When it comes to the best dab pen brands, there are a few names that stand out for their quality, durability, and performance. For affordable options, Yocan offers budget-friendly dab pens that are great for beginners or those on a tight budget. On the other hand, more established and trusted brands like Puffco, Focus V, and Utillian are known for making durable, high-quality dab pens that deliver excellent vapor quality and reliability. These brands have built strong reputations in the dabber pen market and are often the top choice for experienced users looking for long-lasting devices.

Concentrate Vaporizers vs. Cartridges
The main difference between good concentrate pens and oil cartridges is that oil cartridges come pre-filled and can only be used with 510-thread vape batteries. Dab pens, on the other hand, allow you to load any type of concentrate into the atomizer, but most are not compatible with 510 cartridges. If you want a dab pen that also works with cartridges, we recommend the Yocan Cylo, which lets you use both cartridges and its ceramic chamber depending on your preference. You can learn more about this in our dab pens vs. carts article.
Are there any differences between dab pens, shatter pens, and wax pens?
For the most part, all wax pens work and perform quite similarly with all of the different types of concentrates. With higher-quality dabs though, you might prefer sticking to ceramic bucket atomizers as they'll give you slower heat-up times and better overall flavor. If you do use your high-quality concentrates on exposed coils, you'll get massive clouds, but you'll miss out on that awesome flavor.

Yes, you can vape dry flower with the Focus V Aeris by using a dry herb atomizer and adapter ring, but it’s mainly made for concentrates. For the best experience with flower, I recommend checking out the best dry herb vaporizers that are designed specifically for that purpose.
