How to use the KandyPens Crystal?

The Crystal Black from KandyPens vapes is super straightforward and easy to use, with just a single button operation.

1. To load the Crystal Black, simply remove the mouthpiece and use the dab tool to load up your wax onto the atomizer.
2. To turn on this wax pen, just click the button five times and to scroll through the temperature settings, just hit the same button three times. 

With manual heating, you simply press and hold the power button to fire the atomizer up, or you can choose to use session mode which you can enter by hitting the button twice. In this mode, the unit will heat up for 10 seconds at a time. This is good for consumers who like to micro-dose and for newbies who don’t know exactly how long to rip a dab pen. 

Temperature Settings

There are four temperature settings on the KandyPens Crystal Black – 2.6V, 3.0V, 3.6V, and 4.2V. These temperatures are well-calibrated and this is decent flexibility for a wax pen. However, for a premium Wax Pen unit, the lack of precision controls leaves a bit to be desired with the Crystal Black wax pen. The Crystal Black performs the best at either 3.0V or 3.6V. 

Crystal Black Vapor Quality

The overall vapor flavor on the Crystal Black from KandyPens is great. On the low setting, the flavor is as great as you will find. The Crystal Black’s glass mouthpiece and quartz bowl is a great combination that leads to some tasty vapor. The cloud production is minimal on the low settings but quite significant on the high settings. 

On the high settings though, the smoothness is quite lacking, and the glass mouthpiece can become uncomfortable to use, especially with back to back sessions. . This was a bit surprising because the draw resistance is pretty low. The vapor path is pretty short and could be the reason for the hot vapor on the high settings.

On the other spectrum, the lowest temperature takes longer for the dab to heat up and you’ll have some pooling leading to an overall inefficiency. 

Overall, I did appreciate the super clean airpath though and loved the flavor of my live resin on the middle two temperatures.

One small trick that I discovered is that the Crystal’s mouthpiece worked perfectly with the DynaVap Fat Mouthpiece as a 14mm bong adapter, which I then paired with the 14mm hydrotube bubbler. It helped to cool the vapor down quite a lot, and also I didn’t have to worry about my lips on the hot glass on maximum voltage, so make sure to give this a try!  

KandyPens Crystal vs Utillian 2

Overall, I’d say that the most comparable device to the Crystal would be the Utillian 2 because of the similar style of glass mouthpiece and functionality.

The Utillian 2 also comes with four voltage settings, and uses a quartz atomizer, although they are dual exposed coils. The body doesn’t get quite as hot as on the Crystal 2 and the performance is more consistent because you won’t have to worry about under or overheating your dab. For heavy users, it won’t make too much a difference hitting it on high temperatures as both will have absolutely massive clouds. 

KandyPens Crystal Black Battery Life

The 900mAh battery on the KandyPens Crystal Black is solid. The battery could have been better, but it’s not bad at all. Most consumers get about 10 sessions out of a single charge. The Crystal Black also has pass-through charging & while the battery life isn’t bad, an upgrade to consider is the Utillian 5 due to its 1500mAh which will be good for heavy users.

Manufacturing Quality

The stainless steel build of the KandyPens Crystal Black is not cheap, but I do think there could have been more insulation to help it from heating up on the higher temperatures.

Most Best Wax Pens at this price have something that sets them apart from the rest – removable batteries, a compartment for wax, something. The 510-threading option is good for the quartz atomizer, but again nothing special to make it stand out against competition. 

While the body might be durable enough to withstand some drops, I still would have liked to have seen some additional features like a mouthpiece cap or USB-C charging. The Puffco Plus costs similarly to the Crystal Black, but it comes with a unique built-in dab tool along with its premium vapor quality. 

One great thing is the quartz bucket atomizer and glass mouthpiece which do deliver premium performance on the lower voltages. If you like the idea of a quartz to glass vapor path, also be sure to check out the Dr. Dabber Boost Evo E-Rig.

Is it portable?

The Crystal Black is slightly heavier than your typical wax pen, so it might feel heavy in your pocket. At only 10 cm, this dab pen is still fairly portable and will easily fit in any backpack.

It looks a lot like your typical e-liquid vape, so it won’t garner any extra attention while out in public. The odor on the low settings is minimal, but on the high setting, you might get some unwanted attention from the big clouds and coughing it pumps out.

I personally found that it worked very well with a Vape Case as I was able to fit in my live resin and everything else I needed to my friends house where I did my testing. 

KandyPens Crystal Accessories

The KandyPens Crystal dab pen from KandyPens comes with a basic accessories kit that includes an atomizer, a dab tool, a USB charger, a velvet carrying pouch, and a user’s guide. There is a lifetime warranty on the KandyPens Crystal Black battery.

Again though, I would have liked to have seen some kind of mouthpiece cover included in the kit. 

Maintenance 

There isn’t much to maintain with this dab pen, just the glass mouthpiece and the quartz bowl.

You will want to give the Crystal Black from KandyPens vapes a good cleaning after every two or three sessions. Just take a cotton swab to the bowl and the mouthpiece. You can also burn off some excess reside in the atomizer by running the unit, but this drains the battery. 

If you want to make your dab pen cleaning duties easier, check out these pre-packaged, high-quality vaporizer cleaning sticks from Tools420. Never dip your cotton swabs in isopropyl alcohol again. My best advice would be to swap while your dab is still warm so that you can easily clean it off the quartz atomizer. 

Bottom Line

In conclusion, the Crystal Black dab pen offers a glass mouthpiece and quartz bowl which leads to amazing vapor flavor on the low settings. However, it does get a little harsh on the high setting, and the build quality and the accessories kit are just middle of the pack.

I haven’t had a chance to see the KandyPens Crystal 2, so maybe they improved upon the design there!
