Should you buy the KandyPens Oculus?

If you ever used to watch 50-Cent music videos back in the day, you might have seen some innocuous KendyPens product placements. While these glory days might be over, they are still pumping out some high-quality products that deserve some recognition.

One of their latest vaporizers is the KandyPens Oculus which is the combination of a honey straw and nectar collector, coming equipped with a bubbler and a vape stand. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, a nectar collector is a live wire atomizer on the other end of the mouthpiece to inhale at the same time you press the tip into a dab.

In this review, we’ll be going over the performance of the Oculus to help you determine whether or not it’s worth picking up for the affordable $100 or so price tag, as well as how it compares to similar wax vaporizer technology.

Quartz Mesh Atomizer

The Oculus uses a mesh quartz tip atomizer that vaporizes concentrates when you press it into your dabs. There are three voltages that you can use, which all provide a different kind of experience as I’ll talk about.

One thing to know is that the atomizer isn’t as porous as other nectar collectors on the market, so you’ll always have to be moving the atomizer around if you want bigger hits. By that I mean you won’t be able to load on a dab with a dab tool and have it slowly melt into the atomizer.

Another thing to know is that your old dab is going to start cooking as soon as you turn the heater on, so make sure that you press the atomizer into your new dab right away to avoid a burnt taste. My average session was about two big hits, and then closing out the session with a few small inhales as the atomizer cooled down.

Smooth Vapor Quality

While I don’t find the Oculus to be the best in any one category, I found it super fun to use. Especially at the two lower temperatures, the vapor was cool and flavorful enough to be enjoyable for two big hits as you drag the atomizer back and forth in your dab container.

I did find the maximum temperature to be a bit harsher and it might waste some concentrates as well as burn them up instantly if you’re not inhaling already.

Speaking of inhaling, long and slow inhales were key to getting the best vapor quality from the Oculus. If you take a huge inhale, you might have a huge headrush and cough from the surge of harsh vapor, especially on the third pre-set.

The bubbler is very comfortable to use though and adds some nice cooling as it gently bubbles yours inhales.

Dab Extraction Rating

The extraction was fine, but since the quartz mesh isn’t porous, you’ll need to constantly drag the atomizer around. As well, it’s better to press the atomizer’s sides into your container, as if you press the middle, you’ll obstruct the airflow.

KandyPens Oculus Maintenance

From my personal experience, proper maintenance on nectar collector atomizers is crucial to ensuring the best vapor quality. I learned the hard way while testing the XMAX Daboo that not caring for them is a good way to ruin an atomizer.

  • Because the atomizer has two rubber O-Rings, I soaked it in ethyl instead of isopropyl alcohol

You’ll know that it’s time for cleaning when the vapor begins to taste or smell burnt at the beginning of a session. This is letting you know that it’s time to clear out the old gunk sitting deep in the quartz. If your atomizer has turned completely dark brown or black, it’s time to replace it.

If you do require replacements, they’re sold individually for only $15 on the KandyPens website, which isn’t too bad.

Suitable Substances

I used mainly live resin and live rosin and don’t think the Oculus will have problems with any kind of concentrates except maybe diamonds, which might be more efficient in a bucket-style atomizer on a dab pen.

Portability

One of the things I like about the Oculus kit is the included stand that helps with letting the atomizer cool down. While the Boundless Terp Pen might be much more portable as it uses a pen-style design, the Oculus is better for use at home as you won’t have to worry about burning yourself on the hot tip as it cools down.

Overall though, no one will have a problem picking up and using the Oculus. With a Stashlogix Vape Case, you’ll also be able to take it anywhere you want.

KandyPens Oculus Battery Life

The 500mAh proprietary battery is going to be enough to last you around 30 minutes of use, or about 7 sessions of 2-3 big hits. The inclusion of a USB-C port was also a nice decision to see from KandyPens and it felt like the Oculus charged up within half an hour for me using a fast charging block.

Build Quality

The build quality is quite nice on the Oculus. The bubbler and battery portion are smaller than you might expect and have a nice ergonomic shape when paired with each other. The bottom portion features aluminum housing for the atomizer and battery, along with the power button you use to operate the device.

How to use the KandyPens Oculus

  1. Remove the bubbler and fill it with a small amount of water through the top, taking an inhale to seal the water when it’s at the right level
  2. Press the power button 5x fast to turn the Oculus on
  3. Press the button three times to cycle through the three pre-set voltages ( 2.4V / 3.2V / 4.2V )
  4. From there you can either double tap for a 30-second pre-heat, or press and hold the power button for manual heating
  5. Dip the quartz tip into your wax jar, inhale and enjoy!

The only thing to note here is that you have to fill the bubbler removed from the atomizer to fill it, as it leaks until you seal it with an inhale. I also tried having a session while the Oculus was on the stand and that wasn’t as fun as just holding it and pressing the atomizer into a dab.

Comparison to other Nectar Collectors

Moreso than anything, the Oculus is more of an Electric Dab Rig than it is a nectar collector. The closest comparison in terms of performance would be to the Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus, which you can read more about in our Lookah Seahorse Pro Plus Review.

Compared to other nectar collectors, the Oculus is:

  • Bigger
  • Bulkier
  • Designed for at-home use
  • Has a large bubbler
  • Has temperature control and non-draw activation

Out of all the other nectar collectors I’ve tried, the most comparable would be the XMAX Daboo as it has a similar atomizer and design to the Oculus. Where they differ is that the Daboo uses a porous atomizer, while the Oculus does not. The Daboo also uses draw activation.

In terms of performance, the Oculus does do better because Daboo’s temperatures are way too hot at 545-680 degrees Fahrenheit. The Oculus allows you to chill and not cough a lung out, even if a more porous atomizer is better.

KandyPens Oculus Tips and Tricks

  • Take your inhales slowly
  • Take a few small inhale as the atomizer cools down to get the last bit of vapor it produces
  • I filled the bubbler up with a lot of water and it seemed to work better the 1/4th that the manual recommends
  • Less is more for dabs on the atomizer
  • I preferred manual heating as the 30-second heating seemed harder on the battery

Community Consensus

There aren’t too many posts about the Oculus online, but a few customers are asking about the atomizers. As I said previously, I also had some problems with nectar collector atomizers when I was first learning about how they worked. Sticking to my maintenance tips will help you get the most out of your Oculus, though!

kandypens oculus reddit

Pros

  • Excellent for at-home usage
  • Very fun to use
  • Large bubbler capacity compared to competitors
  • USB-C charging
  • Multiple voltages

Cons

  • Learning curve for beginners
  • No draw activation
  • Atomizer requires care
  • Can’t compete with the performance of the G Pen Hyer E-Nail

Who’s it best for?

The KandyPens Oculus will be a great buy for anyone that’s looking for a hybrid between a wax pen and E-Rig. It doesn’t quite fit into any one wax vaporizer category due to its unique specs and design. For less than $150 though, I’d honestly say that most people can’t go wrong by picking up the Oculus for a cool device to share with friends.

With that being said, the Pulsar Sipper is also a great premium version of the Oculus as it has a wax atomizer while also being compatible with Refillable 510 Thread Cartridges. It has an air pump that fills a removable cup that you inhale through a bubbler – One of the most innovative dabbing devices on the market.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, I rock with it, KandyPens – Good job creating a high-quality but affordable nectar collector! As long as you’re taking proper care of your device and know that you’ll need to pick up a lot of extra coils, I can recommend this to anyone looking for a fun sidekick to their everyday vaporizer when you want to switch things up.

The included stand and USB-C charging are nice little touches by the manufacturer that brings up the value of the affordable kit. While it’s not necessarily portable, it’s a fun little unit that you’ll be able to share with friends for a fun high.
